History:
Alfundão may be one of the oldest settlements in Alentejo, and may have reached great importance during Roman times. In fact, the name is of Latin origin, being a reference to the important Fundana family, and which was adapted to Alfundão in the Islamic period. Another important Roman remains consist of two inscriptions dedicated to the goddess Fortuna. During the Visigothic period, a church was built in Alfundão, which was located in the approximate location of the main church. Afonso de Carvalhal, having been a town during this period. Father Jorge Cardoso said that “by tradition he claims that this land was created with the title of town: today it is a poor village”. The Main Church was built in the 16th century, while the Chapel of São Sebastião was probably built in the following century.
